JOB DESCRIPTION: BUS MECHANIC

Department:      Classified/Bus Mechanic

Reports to: Superintendent/Designee, Transportation/Facilities Director

Job Objective: The bus mechanic shall provide for safe transportation to and from school, and for other approved locations as assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.  One (1) to three (3) years of experience, or related training working on all aspects of mechanical and electrical systems; training must include both gas and diesel engines and air/hydraulic brakes.  ASE Certification is preferred.

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus and passenger endorsements. 
  • Available to work irregular hours and/or a non-traditional schedule when required.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of environmental, health and safety regulations. 
  • Displays flexibility, reliability, self-discipline and a willingness to take on challenging tasks.
  • Effective communication, problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Embodies high ethical standards/integrity.  Accepts responsibility for personal decisions/conduct.
  • Maintains a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
  • Consistently performs math calculations and measurements accurately.

Physical Demands:  Duties require lifting/moving materials weighing up to fifty pounds and working from ladders, and  mechanical lifts.

Essential Functions: 1.  Performs vehicle maintenance services.   

 · Implements preventive maintenance programs and procedures to deal with emergency repairs.

Prioritizes and completes assigned tasks within required time-frames.
Manages accurate data collection and timely processing of required paperwork.  Make careful records of all service and repair work performed.
Addresses issues that arise during the absence of the department supervisor.
Diligently attends to job details.  Pursues quality work results. Checks completed tasks to ensure compliance with district specifications. Helps develop effective solutions for work-related problems.
Operates a school bus, both on and off school property, when transportation supervisor determines there is a need.
Checks and maintains fuel and other fluid levels in all buses and other vehicles when stored or being serviced at the garage.
Makes road service calls for disabled vehicles.
Furnish their own tools, except for required specialty tools, which shall be furnished by the Board.  (minimum tool list shall be established)
Performs regular vehicle inspections.   Schedules repairs to correct identified problems.
Encourages drivers to identify problems before equipment fails.  Inspects, services and tests equipment. Reports irregularities and equipment abuse.  Monitors outside vendor performance.
Repairs mechanical systems (e.g., air/hydraulic lines, brakes, electrical, engine, transmission, etc.).
Performs preventive maintenance services (e.g., adjusts/replaces belts, changes oil, lubricates fittings, maintains fluid levels, replaces filters, etc.).
Observe the following regulations:

  1. Only Morgan Local vehicles and equipment are to be worked on school property,
  2. School owned tools and equipment shall not be loaned out,
  3. Mechanics shall not permit visitors and unauthorized persons to loiter in their work areas.

BUS MECHANIC                                                                                                                                    

  • Maintains repair logs, safety inspection records, etc.  Itemizes repair costs for each vehicle.
  • Helps coordinate State Highway Patrol annual bus inspections.
  • Manages departmental housekeeping duties.  Maintains orderly work and storage areas.
  • Complies with Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) information.  Seeks advice when uncertain about product use, storage or disposal procedures.  Follows health and safety regulations to clean up blood, body fluids/tissue, chemical spills, hazardous materials, mold, etc.
  • Documents staff injuries that require treatment.  Prepares accident reports.
  • Implements procedures to protect district property and prevent the loss of supplies/equipment.

  • Develops mutually respectful relationships with co-workers.  Functions as part of a cohesive team.
  • Enforces drug-free workplace rules, board policies and administrative guidelines/procedures.

  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.

  • Respects privacy.  Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.

Working Conditions: Safety is essential to job performance.   Employees must comply with applicable workplace safety regulations, health laws and district procedures if duties involve any of the following situations:

  • Encounters with angry, rude and/or unpleasant individuals.
  • Exposure to air-borne particulates, chemicals, combustible materials, electrical hazards, equipment vibrations, noise, moving mechanical parts, odors and/or slippery/uneven surfaces.
  • Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and/or communicable diseases.
  • Exposure to weather conditions and/or temperature extremes.
  • Extensive standing/sitting.  Frequent balancing, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, or reaching.
  • Operating equipment and/or riding in a vehicle.  Working in or near vehicular traffic.
  • Performing difficult tasks that require dexterity, physical strength and stamina.
  • Traveling to meetings and work assignments.
  • Working at heights, in confined spaces and/or under diminished lighting
